East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in May 2002 and is still considered off the beaten track. With splendid beaches, mountain ranges and colonial-style towns, East Timor has seen a steady influx of tourists. The fishing village of Com is a popular tourist spot and offers great opportunities for fishing, snorkeling and diving. Other attractions include the Maubara Fort, built during Portuguese colonial times, and the coral reefs off the coastal town of Oecussi.
